INEDYTO II
(BIOÉTICA Y PRÁCTICAS RELACIONADAS CON EL FINAL DE LA VIDA)
For several decades, medically assisted death has been the subject of growing bioethical controversy. In Spain, the debate has been marked by various legislative developments, including the 2021 the Organic Law that regulates Euthanasia. The social debate on medically assisted death faces different threats that can prevent these deliberative processes from taking place in appropriate circumstances of reflective dialogue, inclusion and accountability. Polarization, the sterile debate between supposedly antagonistic positions, ideological indoctrination, argumentative fallacies and the lack of empirical support for some of the statements that are used are some of the deliberative deficits of this debate. Addressing these deficits not only requires bringing expert knowledge to the debates, but also the expression and discussion of different values at stake, over which the professionals and experts do not hold any particular authority. Along this process, bioethics can play a decisive role. Bioethics, the interdisciplinary study of morally relevant aspects related to the life and health sciences, facilitates the deliberation that precedes moral and political decision-making. It does so by clarifying the terms of the debates, making sure that they incorporate the voice of the different agents involved, ensuring the validity and correctness of the arguments, identifying areas of possible consensus and explaining the reasons for the disagreements. Understood in this way, bioethics does not aspire to persuade about the benefits of a particular normative position, but to facilitate the critical and reflective exercise necessary for each agent to equip himself with the best arguments to qualify to defend a point of view.
INEDYTO I
(INVESTIGACIÓN SOBRE ÉTICA DE LA DONACIÓN Y EL TRASPLANTE DE ÓRGANOS)
Organ donation systems must be efficient in securing transplantable organs, respectful of ethical standards, and trustworthy, as sharp drops in organ donation rates result from undermined public trust. This research project explores ethical and socially acceptable ways to raise organ donation rates in Europe. It departs from the experience of Spain, the country with highest rates of organ donation in the world. Its specific objectives are: a) To explore the knowledge and the attitudes of European citizens towards ethically challenging policies to increase deceased organ donation rates; b) To assess the risks and opportunities raised by those policies, and c) To provide empirically informed recommendations intended to foster greater efficacy, acceptability and public trust on European organ donation policies. These objectives will be pursued in synergy with a leading group of European experts in public engagement in organ donation (ELPAT-ESOT Public Issues Working Group). As a result of this project international policies that are being proposed to increase organ donation rates will be classified, the ethical challenges they raise will be identified, and the attitudes of the public towards these issues will be identified. To achieve this purpose, systematic reviews of the literature, public surveys and international workshops with experts will be used. Our group will elaborate empirically informed organ donation policy recommendations based on the results of this project. This ‘empirical ethics’ type of research considers data as an essential part of investigation in medical ethics. By testing how organ donation policies can be both socially acceptable and effective, it addresses an important challenge for the wellbeing of society that is included in the Spanish strategy in Science and Technology.
